Painting the Space Between Calm & Chaos
Deirdre is a self-taught abstract artist whose work explores the tension between stillness and disturbance. Inspired by the sea, shoreline, and shifting weather, her paintings trace the emotional undercurrents that exist beneath calm surfaces.
Her Journey
Her artistic journey began in 2018 during a period of recovery after surgery, when painting became both a creative outlet and a way of processing experience.
Early work focused more directly on seascape and landscape, drawn to the changing light, sky, and movement of the coast. Over time, that visual language shifted into abstraction—less concerned with depicting place and more interested in evoking its emotional atmosphere.
Working intuitively with layered colour, gesture and texture, Deirdre creates paintings that hold calm and chaos within the same composition. Some works suggest concealment and pressure, while others reflect residue, release, or the quiet traces left behind after disruption has passed.
"My paintings are not about recreating the landscape — they are about capturing the emotions that remain long after you've left it."
Artist Statement
My work is inspired by the beauty of nature and the emotional responses it stirs within me. The sea and sky have always captivated me—from the calm waters of a summer's day to the force of a storm.
In my abstract expressionist paintings I explore the tension between outward calm and inner turbulence, reflecting the emotional landscapes we all experience.
I'm drawn to the way a tranquil surface can conceal unrest beneath. Through colour, texture and expressive brushwork I aim to evoke serenity and intensity together, creating work that invites reflection and connection.
Painting is where I find balance—a place where stillness and movement, calm and unrest coexist. By embracing these contradictions, I hope to remind others that even during life's most challenging moments there is still beauty, meaning and possibility.
